Skiathos Shopping -

Under the advisement of our host, Fiona from Villa Nikh we did our grocery shopping at a number of places our favourite being "Aztos" a family run business for over 30 years.

They stock everything your need and have an outstanding butcher and deli counter, local beers are at best value here and the shop keeper is always happy to point you in the right direction so that you can experience the best of what the locals have to offer.

I would recommend you buy yogurt from over the counter, it is a typical Greek yogurt which should really be accompanied by some of the local honey and fresh fruit which you can buy at the other super market "Carrfour" which offers better value on fruit.

Skiathos Beach - Ag. Paraskevi

Beach Ag. Paraskevi is a small beach littered with hotel beach umbrellas and sun loungers from the Princess Hotel. We went for a drink at the upmarket hotel "taverna" and were not too impressed. Probably because my ice cold pint was removed from my warm little hands and replaced with a plastic glass... I am not sure about you but I like my beer in a glass, not plastic... And I was not the only one who had his nose put out, the Brit sitting next to me was not impressed and after one plastic mug beer/drink slunk back to his air conditioned hotel room muttering to his wife about the poor service.

I am sure the Princess Hotel does a great job with their rooms and creature comforts and pandering to their guests, however I am not certain I will become one of their guests in the near fututre. Apart from the beer incident, I generally felt unwelcome by the staff. I am not sure what they had been told by management but from my perspective, they did not look very happy and this unhappiness transfered to me.

To qualify to sit at the restaurant tables you must order a meal. They made a concession for us however this was quickly withdrawn when this leapor mentioned he wanted to play a game of cards. Maybe in Greece, cards playing is considered a sport of peasants, but where I come from, many intellectuals participate in a mind twisting game of cards, and I am not talking snap or rummy. We were duly marched off to the "drinking area" like Jews to the gas chambers in Auschwitz.  2 minutes later my beer was removed and replaced with a plastic mug... I probably scored two sips before she was taken away from me forever. To say I was astonished (and slightly amused) is an understatement. Normally I would indulge in creating a scene, perhaps throw the plastic thing and contents at the waiter and bellow out profanities until I had the attention of the whole beach and management back in Cyprus. But such was my disappointment and insult that I decided to serve my "rewengy" cold and on this blog for all and sundry to view until the hotel ceases to exist.

In general this beach was ruined for me by the hotel staff at the Princess Hotel in Skiathos. So if you want a holiday with your beer in a glass, trust me, go somewhere else, do not stay at the Princess Hotel or bother heading that way for a quite drink. There are far better places, more Greek, more friendly, more relaxed, like the taverna at Xanemos where your beer is served for half the price and in a glass. If you prefer the touristy thing, then how about the tavernas you will find at KouKounaries beach... yes, your beer is served in a glass as well.

I don't know about you, but I go on holiday to leave the rules and regulations of the Orwelian state I come from, back at home... I want to relax and for a few days pretend I am not a slave in a generally unpleasant world driven by corporate greed and rules and regulations designed to put more money in the politicians and corporations pockets.

If what I experienced is a result of the bureaucratic nonsense of the EU then Greece would be better off leaving it as fast as possible else live with unhappy bar staff and waiters serving beer in plastic mugs.

Saving Grace?

The two things that saved this beach for me was the woman lying prostate on her back with the largest pair of knockers I had ever seen, casting a shadow over half the beach much to the disappointment of the punters trying to rent out umbrellas and the little kiosk at the entrance to the beach where I purchased a modestly priced ice cream.

Skiathos Recycling - Green Fox

The Green Fox is a a recycling project that is doing very well on the island of Skiathos. There are bins all around the island that have the green fox logo and in these bins PET bottles and containers and tins can be collected.

Everyone can do their bit to help by recycling tins and PET plastics. I urge guest house and hotel owners to get Green Fox bins for their establishments and all tourists and travelers can do their bit by encouraging the places they stay at to get the Green Fox.

We have also come across battery recycling collection shoots at some of the supermarkets. And at Adams on Papadiamantes Street you can recycle your old light bulbs.

Skiathos Bio Garden

We discovered this Bio Garden on the way to the skiathos horse riding center:

Skiathos rubbish dump

We discovered the Skiathos dumping ground...

From what I understand the Greeks store their waste here and at the end of season take the rubbish by ship back to the main land... It seems recycling is slowly being introduced, (mostly by the foreigners). Being a recycling man myself, I was disappointing that glass was unable to be recycled at this moment in time.

Skiathos Restaurant - Sklithri

After our horse ride this is the restaurant we discovered that was open and ready and willing to serve beer. We opted for a draft of Mythos... yum!

Skiathos Beach - Maratha

We briefly visited Maratha beach while searching for a place to drink a beer... we were exhausted after our horse riding adventure...

We spotted the sign to Maratha and tumbled down the little pathway to the beach in the hope of finding a taverna with some chilled beer. Instead we found this little gem, apparently deserted...

Skiathos Restaurant - Ta Nisi

A treat in a lovely location:

Ta Nisi is a lovely little restaurant close to Skiathos town and conveniently down the road from Villa Nikh serving a wide variety of authentic Greek food and wine, wait for it, by the kilogram!

We enjoyed an assortment of meze and about half a ton of the local wine...

Beach Skiathos - Megalos Aselinos

We paid this beach a cursory visit and were not entirely inspired to stay. To be fair it was before the start of season and the tavern was closed.

Skiathos Horse Riding - Skiathos Riding Center

For an hour and a half we gave up our iron horse tweet for the real deal and took to the hills of Skiathos on horse back.

We were treated with views of the coast, trails in the forrest... a worth while treat as far as we were concerned.

Find out more about horse riding in Skathos, Greece by visiting the Riding Center website.

Beach Skiathos - Vromolimnos

Trying to pronounce this beach's name is a tongue twister in its own right... the 2 km it took for us to get to it via scooter and from Villa Nikh did not end with a satisfactory pronunciation. "Vromo Nomo Lomonus" was the best we could muster...

A very pretty beach, with shade, stuff to hire for water sports and when we were there, our own set of Geek Gods playing bats and ball...

Skiathos Scooter Hire - Euro Net

Explore Skiathos and make your own journey. We rented Scooters from Euro Net, George Stagopopoulos and his wife Jo.

Our 150cc Peugot Tweety which we called "Tweet" for short, has to date taken us on our many adventures on the island. As the old cliche goes it's about the journey and not the destination.

Cruising down the main roads take in the sights of all the little hotels, guest houses and tavernas. Strong scents of Jasmin and white Oleander filled our noses, corner after corner we were welcomed by beach views and olive groves, lemon trees and local gardens.

A combination of tar and newly graded dust roads journeyed with us through forests and fields, to beaches and tavernas. Skiathos Town itself  is filled with a noodle pot of  narrow, cobbled streets that are tremendously fun to navigate.

Skiathos Restaurant - Little Windmill

The Little Windmill is located on the waterfront just after the airport and just before the main hub of Skiathos 'city'.

We enjoyed the restaurant for a quick drink, a game of cards and the view...

Beach Skiathos - Xanemos Beach

Xanemos Beach is located at the far end of the Skiathos Airport. You need to take a few back roads past old boats, a boat yard or two, some fields being used to store speed boats, the ubiquitous olive tree groves, and some pretty well looked after horses before you arrive at the sandy beach.

Frequented by locals and with a nice chilled vibe, this remains one of my favourite beaches.

Next to Xanemous beach is a little hill you can hike up which reveals panaramic views of the nearby islands as well as a birds eye view of the beach in question.

At the top of the hill we discovered that some of the ground had been demarcated and what appeared to be old ruins were being uncovered.

The beach its self was clean and pleasant to lie on. You have a choice to laze on sun beds for a few EUR or to bring your own umbrella and laze on the sand, as we did.

Beach Skiathos - Koukounaries

Koukounaries beach is, to say the least, a vibey beach with something for everyone.
It comes with shade, changing facilities and clean toilets. You can rent chairs and umbrellas for around 8 EUR or enjoy the hustle and bustle from one of the tavernas, sit on the sand under the trees or sun tan on the white sandy beaches. If you enjoy diving, a diving center is located on the beach as well.

My impression of this beach was that it has been designed for people looking for a bit of fun. I could not help but notice the "Live Music Events" sign from last year, or the loud music bursting from Thalassa Beach Bar.

We brought our beach umbrella and soaked up the sun however you can rent a deck chair and shade for the day and at the approximate princely sum of 8 EUR.

We enjoyed a beer and a game of Crib at the taverna:

Plenty of activities: peddle boats, water skiing, speed boats, para sailing, wet bikes etc.

The far end of the beech is a Marina and the bay was littered with mono hulls and cats bobbing up and down.

This beach is for those who enjoy water sports and socializing. I can imagine as the sun goes down the music system dials turn up, the rubber arms are bent and much festivities commence...

A great beach for fun. If you are looking for tranquility, this is not the beach for you.

Where to stay in Skiathos - Villa Nikh, the best Villa in Skiathos

I thought I would write about my favourite Villa in Skiathos... its called Villa Nikh (pronounced 'Nicky')  and is conveniently located just far enough from Skiathos town so that you are not encumbered by the hustle and bustle and just close enough so that it is convenient to get to...

Here it is!

We stayed in room number 5 which came with everything we needed:

Mosquito net to keep the bugs away:

And the braai facility for a an evening of entertainment:
